The Enrollment Process

Admission to Detroit Institute of Gastronomy is a multi-step process which consists of evaluation of prior academic experience and assessment for post-secondary readiness of eligible applicants. DIG wants to ensure that the students that begin their education are committed so a multi-step application for enrollment process has been developed.

The Concierge Team is here to help applicants through the process and answer any questions that may come up along the way.

Step One

Build Your Student Profile

Applicant Tasks

Provide your directory information: legal name, date of birth, phone number and email.
Upload a picture of yourself to be used as your Student ID (as much as we love kittens, please no filters!).
Provide contact information for two references.

Once Step 1 is submitted, you will receive a confirmation email to begin,
Step 2. Meanwhile, a concierge will contact your references and ask a few brief questions.

Step Two

Documentation & Assessment

Now the process begins. Step 2 requires the applicant to provide documentation and insight into why they are interested in enrolling. The following information is required for
Step 2 of the application:

Proof of High School Graduation or GED

Ex: transcript or diploma. As a Licensed Post-Secondary Provider, we are responsible to ensure that our students have completed a GED or graduated High School. This is a legal requirement which supports success in a post-secondary institution like ours.

Valid Social Security Card

Apprentice programs are designed to teach students on the job. We want to ensure that applicants are eligible to work in the United States.

Government Issued ID

Ex: State ID, Driver's License, Passport. This is to verify you are who you say you are. Providing identification ensures that we are accepting a real person.

Resume

Prior to starting your education, a concierge will work very closely with you to ensure you find a place of employment that fits your career goals. Providing a resume will help us in connecting you with a partner Place of Employment to begin your apprenticeship. Need help in writing a resume? Knowledge Check

In addition to our students being able to upload material into our system, we want to be sure you have an idea of where to find some basic culinary information. The knowledge check is designed to assess the preparedness of our applicants. There is no "grade" but it must be submitted. For help in completing the knowledge check, contact your concierge.

Essay

As a post-secondary education institution we want to ensure that our students are able to create an essay and upload it to our platform. Please submit one essay about why you want to be a chef, about a time that you overcame an obstacle or why you are choosing a culinary apprentice program to learn the culinary arts. The essay should be ~650 words. You also have the option to create a video essay submission. Read about the Application Video Essay Guidelines.

Letter of Recommendation

Success is formed on the foundation of multiple factors. One of those factors is a support network. We are looking to see if you have a support network and are discussing your future in the culinary arts. Providing a letter of recommendation helps the concierge team develop a better understanding of the applicant. Not sure who to ask? Talk to your family, friends, coworkers, etc. or return to the references submitted in step 1 and ask them for a letter. Contact us immediately if you feel this is an obstacle you can not overcome and we will help you the best we can.

You're Almost There!

Once the applicant submits all the above requirements, they are ready to take the next step! Our concierge team will review the material and assess the applicant's readiness for enrollment.

If the criteria is met, a non-refundable commitment deposit is required to hold the apprentice's spot for the next available start.

Once we receive all the material, the applicant will sign the enrollment agreement and become an official student of the Detroit Institute of Gastronomy!
